Yesterday was a day full of giggles! I (Lisa) went down to my parents around noon and dad and I had lunch together! This allowed mom to get things done around the place but at the same time we all got to visit! Mom and dad are wanting to move to a unit on the 4th floor of their building. A little smaller but amazing views and pergo floors...which dad loves. So I spent some time measuring their current space to compare...however all they had was a yard stick which was comical in itself! Anyhoo... mom was telling me how starting next week there is a lady named Nancy (ironic) coming for in home care for dad! I immediately asked why he wouldn't be going to the providence elder place center..which I thought was the original plan! Mom explained that the dr, and dad didn't think it was a good idea because the people at the center are A LOT older than dad and in very different shape! It isn't the most healthy environment for him mentally and it is just as easy for someone to come to their place.
Dad went on to tell me about his first experience alone at providence! "I got on the bus they strapped me in and started to head down Mercer Street... The driver exclaimed 'SHIT there is so much traffic' he turned off and headed a different direction to which a women in the front started to panic and turned around to me 'I've never been this way, have you been this way? where are they taking us'" Then dad said he got to the center and after his appointment was going to have lunch and they helped him into the area and sat him down at a table with a few people. One man just stared at him another talked about how handsome he was... Dad telling this story is much more entertaining then me trying to write it! But needless to say mom and I were both in tears laughing!
So starting Monday Nancy #2 will be coming Monday-Friday 2-8pm! Although we will probably not have her come on Friday's and Angie and I can spend that time with dad....its much easier when there are two of us to make sure he is fed and that we don't leave the place a disaster for mom when we leave! :)
I'm not sure how helpful I was, but it was a fun visit and allowed me to spend time with both mom and dad! They have become pretty entertaining those two!
Mike will love this story: After one of my father's near death experiences, he was placed in a skilled nursing facility in Palm Desert, CA. He went into the dining room ONCE. It was too depressing for him. I was able to secure us a time in the staff lounge when no one was on break. I brought in a table cloth, wine, cloth napkins, a tee light, china and food from Bristol Farms every night for the 3 weeks he was there. There was NO WAY he was going to sit at those tables with those sicker people. He tried everything to get out of that place! He told his new female doctor, "I've got an engineering degree and this is an unsafe place! Look at the ceiling. Notice how the electrical..blah blah blah..." She replied, "Well, Mr. Slattery. I've got a medical degree and that trumps your engineering degree and I say you're staying here until I say you can leave!" He literally signed himself out, against doctor's orders, and hired an LVN to come into the house.
ReplyDeleteSay hi to Mikey for us!
